Richard Howe, Earl Howe, was born in London, England, on March 19, 1726, the son of Emanuel Scrope Howe (1699-1735) and Mary Sophia Charlotte von Kielmansegg (1703-1782). Josiah Burchett (1666?-1746) was M.P. for Sandwich 1703-1713 and 1721-1741, secretary of the Admiralty, and the author of a naval history published in 1720; see the Dictionary of National Biography. Sir Clowdisley Shovell (1650-1707) and Sir George Rooke (1650-1709), were two British admirals who spent their naval careers in Channel and Mediterranean duties. Shovell served with Rooke on occasion, as in the 1696 attack on Calais, the aborted 1702 expedition to Cadiz, and the 1704 capture of Gibraltar.
